Formation of Nationalist Congress Party
After the 12th Lok Sabha was dissolved and the 13th Lok Sabha elections were announced in 1999, Sharad Pawar, P. A. Sangma, and Tariq Anwar demanded that the party nominate a candidate who was born in India as prime ministerial candidate rather than the Italian-born Sonia Gandhi, who had joined party politics and taken over as Congress president from Sitaram Kesri. This was in response to the fact that Sonia Gandhi succeeded Sitaram as the new Congress president. The Congress Working Committee (CWC) consequently expelled the three people from the party for a period of six years.
In response to the circumstance, Pawar and Sangma founded the Nationalist Congress Party in June 1999. After the 1999 election for the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, the new party and the Congress party teamed up despite their disagreement to form a coalition government in Maharashtra. In order to prevent the Shiv Sena and BJP alliance from regaining power, this was done.
